Sopaipilla Ring

Chile Collection

  • Inspiration: Sopaipilla

  • Materials: Gold

  • Craft Detail: Rounded form, matte texture

  • Region: Central Chile

  • Dish Profile: Savory, fried

This ring is inspired by sopaipillas, a traditional Chilean fried dough made from wheat flour and pumpkin. Sopaipillas are known for their golden-brown color, smooth rounded shape, and lightly textured surface after frying. These characteristics informed the jewellery design: the domed circular form reflects the shape of freshly fried dough, while the matte gold finish references the surface texture created during cooking. Sopaipillas are typically prepared by frying small discs of dough and served warm, often sold by street vendors.

Raj and Clara encountered sopaipillas at a street food stall during their stay in Valparaíso. They observed how the vendor shaped the dough by hand and adjusted thickness before frying to achieve an even surface. Clara focused on the role of sopaipillas as everyday food, while Raj studied the consistent round form. These observations were translated into jewellery through controlled doming and the selection of a soft matte surface based on sketches made during the visit.

During one visit, the vendor explained that pumpkin content affects the dough’s color after frying. Raj later noticed similar warm tones in locally produced ceramic tableware nearby.
