Shaved Ice Dessert Earrings
Taiwan Collection
Inspiration: Taiwanese shaved ice (baobing)
Materials: Gold, translucent gemstones, pastel enamel
Craft Detail: Layered crystalline surfaces
Region: Southern Taiwan
Dish Profile: Sweet, fruit-based
Inspiration
This design references Taiwanese shaved ice desserts (baobing), which consist of finely shaved ice topped with fruit, syrups, and condensed milk. The dish is recognized for its pale, translucent base and distinct layers of color added at the surface. These characteristics are directly reflected in the earrings: frosted gemstones mirror compacted ice, while pastel enamel accents correspond to common toppings such as mango, strawberry, and taro. Shaved ice is prepared by shaving large ice blocks into thin flakes, creating a crystalline structure that informed the jewellery’s layered surface treatment.
Discovery
Aisha and Cate encountered shaved ice at a dessert-focused night market stall in southern Taiwan. They observed how vendors build the dessert vertically, adding toppings only after the ice is fully shaped. Cate focused on the visual separation between ice and fruit layers, while Aisha noted how color intensity varies depending on syrup density. These observations informed the jewellery design through stacked material placement, controlled translucency, and enamel color testing recorded in their notebooks.
Travel Diary
While waiting for their order, Aisha and Cate noticed that metal shaving tools are rinsed continuously to keep ice texture consistent. Aisha later referenced this precision when refining the earrings’ surface transitions.
