Pastel de Choclo Pendant

Chile Collection

  • Inspiration: Pastel de choclo

  • Materials: Gold, ivory enamel, yellow gemstone

  • Craft Detail: Layered enamel, softly textured edge

  • Region: Central Chile

  • Dish Profile: Savory, corn-based

This pendant is inspired by pastel de choclo, a traditional Chilean dish made from ground corn, milk, and butter, baked over a savory filling. The dish is known for its rich yellow color, creamy surface, and gently textured baked edges. These features shaped the jewellery design directly: the corn-yellow gemstone reflects the color of fresh corn topping, the ivory enamel layers reference the creamy consistency of the corn mixture, and the softly textured gold rim mirrors the uneven, baked edges of the dish. Pastel de choclo is typically prepared using fresh corn kernels blended into a thick mixture and baked until lightly browned on top.

Raj and Clara encountered pastel de choclo in a family kitchen while visiting central Chile. They observed the preparation process, noting how the corn mixture is spread in layers and how the surface develops texture during baking. Clara focused on the cultural role of the dish as a shared meal, while Raj examined the visual contrast between the smooth interior and baked edge. These observations were translated into jewellery through layered enamel application and controlled surface texturing in gold, based on sketches made during the visit.

During the visit, the cook explained how different corn varieties affect color intensity after baking. Raj later noticed similar layered textures in locally made ceramic dishes used for serving.
