Inspiration
The pendant draws inspiration from papaya, a fruit widely consumed in Brazil for its bright orange color and smooth, soft texture. The vibrant hue of ripe papaya informed the central orange gemstone, selected for its saturation and clarity. Palm leaves, often seen across coastal and inland regions, provided the shape reference for the curved green gemstone accents, arranged to mimic the symmetry of natural fronds. The lower clustered detail echoes the darker seeds found in the center of papaya. In many Brazilian households, papaya is served fresh at breakfast, typically halved and scooped — the contrast between the flesh and seeds guided the pendant’s color structure.
Discovery
Mei and Benjamin first connected papaya and palm motifs during a visit to a small fruit orchard, where a grower demonstrated how to identify ripeness by inspecting the fruit’s surface and interior color. Mei sketched the elongated seed cavity of the fruit, noting its proportions, while Benjamin focused on the repetition and taper of nearby palm leaves. Back in their workspace, they compared stone cuts to the leaf silhouettes and used gemstone arrangements to replicate the seed cluster pattern captured in their notes.
Travel Diary
During one orchard visit, a farmer showed Mei and Benjamin how to trim young palm leaves without damaging the plant — a detail that helped Mei refine the pendant’s leaf outline. On another day, they tasted a local papaya variety by accident, whose deeper orange tone influenced the gemstone selection.
