Mochi Snow Skin Earrings
Taiwan Collection
Inspiration: Taiwanese mochi
Materials: Gold, enamel, pastel gemstones
Craft Detail: Rounded forms, matte surface finish
Region: Taipei
Dish Profile: Sweet, rice-based
Inspiration
These earrings are inspired by Taiwanese mochi, a rice-based dessert known for its soft exterior, rounded shape, and lightly powdered surface. Mochi typically appears in pale tones such as white, pink, and green, depending on filling and coating. These qualities informed the jewellery design directly: smooth rounded elements reflect the dessert’s shape, while matte enamel finishes reference its starch-dusted surface. Mochi is prepared by steaming glutinous rice dough and shaping it by hand before coating, a process that emphasizes surface softness and uniformity.
Discovery
Aisha and Cate encountered mochi at a traditional confectionery shop in Taipei. They observed how dough portions are weighed before shaping to ensure consistency and how excess starch is brushed off before serving. Aisha focused on surface finish and balance, while Cate noted the restrained color palette. These observations were translated into jewellery through controlled stone sizing, soft enamel application, and proportion sketches developed during the visit.
Travel Diary
While visiting the shop, Aisha and Cate noticed mochi trays resting on wooden boards rather than metal to prevent sticking. Cate later referenced this material choice when refining the earrings’ matte surface quality.
