Manjar Earrings

Chile Collection

  • Inspiration: Manjar

  • Materials: Gold, amber-toned gemstones

  • Craft Detail: Smooth flowing drops, polished surfaces

  • Region: Ñuble Region

  • Dish Profile: Sweet, caramel-based

These earrings are inspired by manjar, a caramel spread made by slowly cooking milk and sugar until thick and glossy. Manjar is widely used in Chilean pastries and desserts and is recognized for its warm golden-brown color and smooth, flowing consistency. These characteristics informed the jewellery design directly: caramel-gold gemstones reference the finished spread, while soft curved forms mirror its fluid texture. Manjar is typically prepared through long, controlled heating, which influenced the emphasis on polished surfaces and continuous lines.

Raj and Clara encountered manjar during a visit to a local bakery in Chillán known for traditional sweets. They observed how the spread is cooked slowly to avoid crystallization and how its viscosity changes as it cools. Clara focused on the role of manjar in regional pastry culture, while Raj examined its reflective surface under light. These observations were translated into jewellery through high-polish gemstone selection and flowing gold settings, based on sketches made during the visit.

During the bakery visit, the baker explained how copper pots are still preferred for even heat distribution. Raj later referenced the smooth interior of these pots when refining the earrings’ finish.
