Inspiration
The inspiration comes from tapioca pearls, a widely used ingredient in Brazilian desserts and drinks. Tapioca pearls are appreciated for their smooth, rounded appearance and translucent ivory tone when cooked. These characteristics shaped the earrings directly: the large and small bead-like spheres echo the uniformity of hydrated tapioca pearls, while the soft, light-reflective finish references their glossy surface. Tapioca is typically prepared by hydrating cassava starch until it forms consistent, spherical shapes — a process that informed the emphasis on perfect geometry and surface uniformity in this design.
Discovery
Mei and Benjamin saw tapioca pearls being made during a kitchen demonstration at a small café, where a cook rolled the starch mixture into tiny spheres before boiling them. Benjamin observed how each pearl maintained a uniform translucency once cooked, while Mei studied the scale variations between dry and hydrated pearls. These observations influenced the earrings’ paired-sphere structure, with proportion ratios based on their notes, and led them to select materials that preserved the soft, semi-luminous quality of tapioca.
Travel Diary
During one visit, a cook showed Mei and Benjamin how to swirl the pearls in cold water to achieve a consistent surface — a detail Mei later referenced when refining the earrings’ finish. On another day, they found a regional tapioca drink variation they hadn’t planned to try, which helped them compare color clarity across different preparations.
