The Caipirinha is Brazil’s most famous cocktail, known for its bold lime aroma, zesty acidity, and subtle sweetness from muddled sugar. Its vibrant green tones, crystalline ice, and glossy citrus wedges shape the visual language of this design. The earrings echo the cocktail’s colour palette through lime-green gemstones and sugar-sparkle enamel that resemble the frosted rim of a freshly mixed drink. Traditionally, the limes used in a Caipirinha are sourced from small coastal farms, where their bright peel and juicy texture are prized for both flavour and appearance.

Mei and Benjamin discovered the Caipirinha’s distinctive character at a small street stall in Rio de Janeiro, where a vendor demonstrated how the lime is pressed to release aroma and natural oils. Benjamin was struck by the way the sliced wedges caught the light, while Mei focused on the geometric shapes created by the citrus segments. Later, they sketched these wedge formations in their travel notebooks and experimented with gemstone faceting and enamel texture to recreate the cocktail’s fresh, crystalline look in jewellery form.

During their visit, a local craftswoman showed Mei and Benjamin how she carved tiny citrus motifs into wooden kitchen tools—an unexpected detail that later influenced their texture tests. One evening, while wandering through Lapa, they found a market stall selling hand-cut glass that shimmered like cocktail ice, reinforcing their final design direction.
