Pineapple Cake Pendant

Taiwan Collection

  • Inspiration: Taiwanese pineapple cake

  • Materials: Gold, yellow gemstone

  • Craft Detail: Geometric frame, textured surface

  • Region: Northern Taiwan

  • Dish Profile: Sweet, pastry-based

This pendant is inspired by Taiwanese pineapple cake, a traditional pastry consisting of a buttery outer layer filled with sweet pineapple jam. The cake is known for its warm golden color, compact rectangular shape, and slightly textured surface. These characteristics informed the jewellery design directly: the golden-yellow gemstone reflects the pineapple filling, while the structured geometric frame references the pastry’s compact form. Pineapple cakes are typically baked in molds and served individually, a detail that guided the pendant’s contained, balanced proportions.

Aisha and Cate encountered pineapple cakes at a specialty bakery in Taipei known for traditional gift pastries. They observed how the dough develops a fine surface texture during baking and how filling density affects the final shape. Cate focused on surface structure and symmetry, while Aisha noted the contrast between filling and crust. These observations were translated into jewellery through textured metal finishes, controlled gemstone sizing, and geometric framing developed through sketches.

During the visit, the baker explained how pineapple jam consistency changes depending on cooking time. Cate later referenced this controlled variation when refining the pendant’s surface texture.
