Calafate Berry Pendant

Craft Detail: Smooth cabochon, refined frame
Region: Southern Patagonia

Inspiration
This pendant is inspired by calafate berries, a small, dark berry native to southern Chile and Patagonia. The berry is known for its deep blue-purple color, slightly sweet taste, and speckled skin. These characteristics informed the jewellery design directly: the indigo gemstone reflects the berry’s color, while subtle internal variations reference its naturally speckled surface. Calafate berries are typically harvested wild and used in jams, desserts, and syrups across southern Chile.
Discovery
Raj and Clara encountered calafate berries during a visit to a local food shop specializing in Patagonian products. They observed the berries being processed into preserves, noting the density of color once cooked. Clara focused on the berry’s regional importance, while Raj studied how light interacted with the fruit’s skin. These observations were translated into jewellery through the selection of a deep-toned gemstone and a smooth, protective gold frame based on on-site sketches.
Travel Diary
While traveling through Patagonia, Clara noticed calafate motifs repeated in regional textiles and packaging. Raj later referenced these simplified forms when finalizing the pendant’s proportions.
